Our Young Entrepreneurs

The Department of Industry Services (DIS) has walked the journey with some of our young entrepreneurs in the early stage of their entrepreneurial journey.  Some was awarded the ACE Start-Up Grant from SPRING Singapore while some continued their journey without the extra funding.

One lesson learnt is that, “If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed.

The vision pulls you.” –Steve Jobs

APT 811 on Entrepreneurship

DIS: What are the necessary setups to do before embarking on the entrepreneur path?”

APT811: The setup for my industry has much lower setup and sunken costs. But you should have a group that shares the same vision and beliefs as you. A group with different skill sets that will stand together with you through thick or thin. Lastly, before diving head first into the new venture, know what your opportunity cost is, and as with every investment, be prepared to lose that amount you invested.”

DIS: What are your views on the sustainability of start-ups not seeking any external funding?”

APT811: There were two ways for us to start a company, hire the best people to work with, or “get your feet in the mud” and learn the necessary skills. We didn’t have any external funding for hiring, so we learnt the skills, and have been growing organically. While doing everything without external funding does allow the entrepreneurs to understand all the parts of their business and maintain full control, it does take a lot more time and effort. Having said that, seeking external funding does allow the startup to focus on scalability and building the best product, instead of focusing on sales before anything else.”

DIS: “Should young entrepreneurs start a business unrelated to their field of study in school?”

APT811: At the end of the day, being an entrepreneur requires so much more than the area of study in school. People don’t buy a product because of the skills or knowledge the creators have. They buy it because it’s a good product or service. So, while being familiar with the industry is beneficial, but don’t let it stop you from making a great idea a reality.”

Double Jump

Double Jump

DoubleJump is an e-commerce startup founded in 2015 by two friends, Herman and Jonathan who shares the same passion for gaming.

While waiting for their favourite game they were playing to be done loading. They casually talked about founding a company related to the game industry. DoubleJump was therefore born and established since then.

Herman and Jonathan realized that gaming communities have limited access to unique gaming merchandises that are commonly found in Japan. DoubleJump aims to bring the products to countries all over the world so gamers can easily get access to their favourite gaming merchandises so they can add it to their personal collection.

There are all sorts of gamers – casual, ardent and more. For a dedicated few, gaming is a part of their daily life. With that notion in mind, DoubleJump want to give them easy access to the fun gaming experience they desire. With DoubleJump, gamers can display their love for their favourite games literally by living with it.

DoubleJump On Entrepreneurship

DIS : “What to do if a start-up have yet to thrive for a period of time?”

DoubleJump : “Most startup businesses would not thrive even after a long period of time. There may be many factors leading to that situation. It could be time, not ripe for market, lack of perseverance and more. Some good things that we have experienced, is to continue to reach out to our audience, get feedbacks and improve on areas that we are lacking in. Change is a constant and we embrace changes. We believe we need to adapt to survive.”

DIS : What are your views on the sustainability of start-ups not seeking any external funding?”

DoubleJump : “Having external funding definitely takes the load off for sourcing for capital. Asking for money is never an easy task, delivering after receiving that trust is even harder. Although, we may have limited funds but that does not stop us from doing what we need to do.

It is just a matter of prioritising which activities come first and allocating whatever resources we have to it and also redefining what is really critical for the business to sustain. An example would be, rely more on social media platforms for advertising and cut down our spending on big search engine platforms.”

DIS : Should young entrepreneurs start a business unrelated to their field of study in school?”

DoubleJump : “The first thing a budding entrepreneur should consider is, if they are serious about starting a business or even to a bigger context if they are sincere about bringing their ideas to life. Having said that, skillsets that students acquired from their studies comes in handy to accelerate their day to day operations, subject matter and even knowledge to what they are doing.

However that is almost not the deciding factor on choosing what they want to do. Jonathan and I are from very different background, computer studies and industrial design. We somehow manage to talk to various people, explore various options of doing things and slowly, things seem to set its own course.”

GEESUALS on Entrepreneurship

What motivates or inspires you to take the entrepreneurial path?

Geesuals: “Since graduating from SP, we have always dabbled with taking up freelance projects together and serviced clients in our free time. Being 27 and 25 respectively in 2014 was when it hit us that if we don’t take this step and start our entrepreneurial journey now, we will never start. The idea of being too comfortable in our jobs and not taking risks out there made us feel uncomfortable. And at that age, we felt that it was the best time for us to fail early and frequently in order to be better and greater at what we do. Most importantly, we felt the great urge to help more people solve their presentation, branding, marketing and design problems in our unique way. Hence, we decided to embark and create our very own version of entrepreneurship journey.”

How has DIS helped in getting ACE Start-Up Grant from SPRING Singapore?

Geesuals: “Hwa Soon and Dee played a pivotal role in assisting us to obtain the ACE Start-Up Grant. Their dedication to help aspiring entrepreneurs have been phenomenal. They spent countless of hours helping us with our business plan, presentation style, even steered our presentation to fully showcase our strengths to the panel of evaluators. Simultaneously, they have been showing their support and have been cheering us on since day 1. We are definitely grateful to have met staff like Hwa Soon and Dee from DIS who go out of their way to help aspiring entrepreneurs.”

What are your advices for aspiring entrepreneurs who wants to start a business?

Geesuals: 1.Don’t just Think. Start Acting. Keep on Reiterating.

A lot of times, we tend to think and plan too much and not act on our business/marketing/sales ideas. And majority of the time, the results that we get digress from our original plan. We’ve adopted a simple system at Geesuals. When we have an idea, we act on it at a small scale and we keep on reiterating the execution plan until we find the best way to do it at a large scale and achieve our goals. We have been surprised numerous times by how our original assumptions were challenged.

  1. Learn. Take Action

Books are a great source of inspiration, knowledge and motivation. We are constantly on the lookout for new books that cover wide array of topics. From our own field of marketing, to productivity hacks to autobiography of great personalities around the world. Most importantly, after reading each book, we decide on key takeaway action plan where we implement the knowledge that we’ve learnt into the business or our personal lives. So, read consistently, learn from the books that you read and take action by putting into practice what you’ve learnt.

  1. Get Used to Uncomfortable Situations

The journey of entrepreneurship will put you in a lot of uncomfortable situations. These are mostly necessary uncomfortable situations that help us reach our goals. Knowing and getting used to the idea that you will be put in such situations and start devising a personal system to manage it is a good practice. Before you know it, you will be an expert at being comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

Personal Media on Entrepreneurship

DIS: “What motivates or inspires you to take the entrepreneurial path?”
Personal Media : “Go a little further, you’ll find yourself” is essentially the quote that describes our eagerness and curiosity to discover the best we can be. We were active in community service and national projects, but we felt we weren’t doing enough. We want to do something that can be an immediate benefit to the community and so we did – the entrepreneurial journey.”

DIS : “How has DIS helped in getting ACE Start-Up Grant from SPRING Singapore?”
Personal Media : DIS has open up doors of opportunity and foster our growth in this tough entrepreneurial journey. It plays an important role connecting us with resources and people. It’s valuable eco-system help us to learn and inspire us in our entrepreneurship development. It’s tremendous amount of support and guidance gave us a kickstart to the huge entrepreneurial world.”

DIS : “What is the most difficult thing that needs to be overcome in order to be a successful start-up?”

Personal Media : We learned that self-belief is immensely important for any start-up. Yet being wise has it’s essence not to be taken lightly. As youth, we often doubt ourselves and feel we aren’t good enough to do what we want to. We should be fearless and go for the things we passionately believe in. But respect the one that comes before us and learn from their advices and lessons. Should we encounter any difficulties, don’t stop. Keep going and never give up, no matter what.”

Tripcendo on Entrepreneurship

DIS: “What to do if a start-up have yet to thrive for a period of time?

Tripcendo: “ Very often start-ups face the problem of discoverability rather than a non-market validated product or services that have no demand. It’s important to find out the places your target audience are and the channels you can market your products. You can have a game changing product but “doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does – Steuart Henderson Britt.’’

DIS: ‘’ Where to generate and obtain relevant skills and ideas to start-up a business?’’

Tripcendo: ‘’    Ideas to start a business come in the most unexpected time and places. All we know is that Tripcendo didn’t happen by simply sitting in a room and brainstorming about big Ideas that could change the world, it was from a problem that was really personal and we feel that it have been affecting millennials travellers all around the world and we wanted to solve it. As an entrepreneur we have to do many things ourselves because there’s not much capital to budget for hiring, the best way to obtain relevant skills is through a mentor who had been where you want to be. ‘’

DIS: ‘’ Should young entrepreneurs start a business unrelated to their field of study in school?’’

Tripcendo: “Yes!  Felix and I are both pursuing a diploma in engineering but we share a similar vision of allowing travellers to travel in a world without strangers by living local. What we at Tripcendo are building is a Travel experience product and we’re not from any Tourism courses or business courses. You’ll need to have tremendous passion for what you are going to build in your business, and this passion may not be related to your field of study. ‘’
