Students demonstrating the use of the cosmetic safety evaluation test kits.
Other safety evaluation tests include photo-toxicity and Mutagenicity.
There is ongoing public concern that humans are exposed to a large number of chemicals of diverse structures, and consequently a need for the safety evaluation of tens of thousands of chemicals. At the same time there is a strong pressure to reduce our reliance on animal experimentation and to rely increasingly on in vitro and in silico data. SP has built up the capability on cosmetic safety evaluation, including cytotoxicity testing, skin irritation, eye irritation and skin sensitization, which are very frequently needed for commercial cosmetic products. Other safety evaluation tests include photo-toxicity and Mutagenicity. These capabilities will guide us in formulation development, provide consultancy test for local companies and create collaborations with other research institutes. In this project, the students have been working on FYP-internship to meet the expectation from industry partners.
